Lizzy Yarnold - Victory Parade......
Kent
Lizzy Yarnold – the District’s Double Olympic Champion - Victory Parade
Lizzy Yarnold – the District’s Double Olympic Champion - Victory Parade
Residents can see double Winter Olympic Champion, Lizzy Yarnold, in person on Wednesday 18 April 2018 on her victory bus tour of the Sevenoaks District.
The tour will begin at Sevenoaks District Council offices at 9.30am, where the public can wave Lizzy off, and there will be a half hour stop off at Swanley High Street at 11am. On route, the bus will also pass through Otford, Eynsford and Horton Kirby before finishing in West Kingsdown.
The tour will include stops at several local schools as Lizzy is keen to inspire a new generation of young athletes. Unfortunately, the public will not be allowed into the grounds of the schools included on the tour.
The full route and timings are available at www.sevenoaks.gov.uk/lizzyygold
Schools and community groups who want to congratulate Lizzy on route should let the Council know by calling 01732 227000 or e-mailing communities@sevenoaks.gov.uk so the Council can arrange for the bus to slow down as it passes them.
Live progress of the bus on the day of the tour will be posted on the Council’s twitter feed @sdc_newsdesk. The Victory bus tour is being organised by Sevenoaks District Council in partnership with Go Coach.
Lizzy made history on Saturday 17 February 2018 when she became the first British athlete to successfully defend a Winter Olympic title. The Skeleton sensation retained her Olympic Gold at the Korean Winter Games in Pyeongchang after she won Gold at the Sochi Winter Olympic Games in 2014.
Lizzy, who grew up in West Kingsdown in the Sevenoaks District, was the only British athlete at this year’s Winter Olympics to clinch a gold medal.
Lizzy is a talented all-round athlete who took up the Skeleton after entering a talent search in 2009. It takes nerves of steel to take part in this sport, as competitors slide down a frozen track, lying face down on a sled, reaching speeds in excess of 90 miles an hour, with no brakes!
When Lizzy first took up the Skeleton, the Sevenoaks District Sport Council, funded by Sevenoaks District Council, awarded her a grant to help with the transition to the new sport.
District Olympian, Lizzy Yarnold, says: “It still hasn’t really sunk in that I am now a Double Olympic Champion! The last four years has been tough and at times I wasn’t sure if I would be able to defend my title, but it just shows if you dream big and work hard then who knows what you can achieve. Thanks to everyone in the Sevenoaks District for all their support. I can’t wait to come and visit and show as many young people as possible my two Olympic Gold Medals - dreams can come true!”
Cllr Peter Fleming, Leader of the Council, adds: “Lizzy’s hard work, drive and sacrifice to become an Olympic champion is an inspiration to us all. I am delighted that we were able to help her early on in her career through our funding of the Sevenoaks District Sports Council. I am deeply honoured that she has agreed to once again tour the Sevenoaks District where she grew up and spend time inspiring the next generation.”
The route and timings are as follows

Sir John Surtees Sadly Dies......

Edenbridge Racing “Hero” Sadly Dies!

Sir John Surtees a well known and respected “Hero” of Edenbridge, sadly died on Friday March 10th at St George’s Hospital, London, due to a respiratory condition which he had been suffering from, he was 83 years old.

He was a favourite to all who knew him in the town, he had a super following when he demonstrated his car’s and motorcycles in the Town’s 2014 May Day Parade...screaming engines, along Station Road through the Town, with himself driving and his crew in and on Surtees own cars and motorcycles.

Edenbridge Racing “Hero” Sadly Dies!

He was, and is still the only man living to have ever won a The Grand Prix “World Championship” on two and four wheels…A superb achievement for this young racer in his early days on the race tracks.

During his reign as a motorcycle racer he won four 500cc titles in – 1956, 1958, 1959, and 1960, also winning the Formula 1 Title in 1964 racing for Ferrari. In his early days, from 1958 to 1960 he was 350cc and the 500cc World Champion on two wheels.

John was awarded an MBE in 1959, which was the same year as he won “Sports Personality of the Year” a Tribute to a Great Racing Hero of the era!

In 2009, John was then awarded the OBE, followed in 2016 with a CBE award

During his race career Surtees, had the magic influence and determination, coupled with daring speed to win his Most Honoured Titles on two and four wheels. Between 1960 and 1972 he drove for Lotus, Honda, Cooper, Lola and BRM – winning six F1 races with 111 starts.

In later year’s he set up his own Formula 1 team when it made it’s first showing in 1970 at the British Grand Prix at Brands Hatch…One of his favourite circuits.

He also became Chairman of the British Team in the latter years which was the A1 Grand Prix Series, which has now been replaced.

His son Henry was competing in the Formula 2 series when he was tragically killed at Brands Hatch in 2009, only aged 18. John and his family went on to remember their son, and to make it a lasting Memorial to his Name with the - Henry Surtees Foundation - in aid of many who are recovering from brain and bodily related injuries due to motorsport accidents.

We Remember Sir John Surtees as a remarkable man…and more his own life devoted to motor sports, he was the life of Motor Racing in cars and motorcycles. He remains the “Hero” of the British people….As Still the only Man Winning Two World Campionships on Two and Four Wheels….!!!

Kent wins national Fire and Rescue Project of the Year award
Kent
Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) has won a national award in the public sector’s prestigious annual efficiency awards. The Improvement and Efficiency Social Enterprise (iESE) awards highlight the best practice and improvement from councils, police & fire services. KFRS, along with Kent Police, won the Fire & Rescue Project of the Year category for its work to develop a shared 999 mobilising system. KFRS is the first fire service in the UK to share a control room and work on a truly multi-agency mobilising system with police. The mobilising system provides real-time information on incident location and resources. This cost-effective solution allows the two services to share essential information, particularly during major emergencies, in order improve interoperability and rapidly mobilise the right resources. Other benefits to the move have included giving KFRS access to a countywide CCTV network, and improved joint working during major emergencies.

Tunbridge Wells Commemorates...A Spectacular WW1 Event
TWO BUDDING arts undergraduates have spoken about their first forays into university education after securing funds from a partnership between AXA PPP healthcare and Tunbridge Wells’s Trinity Theatre last year.
Following an application and shortlisting process, Monica Young and Hazel Low, former pupils of Bennet Memorial and Mascalls School, respectively, each secured £500 from the Trinity Bursary scheme, which seeks to assist with the financial burden of studying the arts in order to support and nurture local talent.
Monica, aged 19 from Pembury, now a Theatre Arts course student at East 15 Acting School, says, “This bursary has allowed me to not only travel and see more Theatre but to purchase more plays and actors’ journals to help broaden my understanding and knowledge for my course and my auditions! It has been extremely beneficial and I don't know what I would have done without it!”
