Free musical helps older people beat bogus callers

Older people in the Sevenoaks District have the unique chance to see a popular musical performance completely free of charge next month.

Residents aged 60 and older can see the see the ‘Trickster’ musical performance at local venues in Edenbridge, Sevenoaks and Swanley. Trickster has completed over 400 performances nationwide to excellent critical reviews.

Sevenoaks District Council, which is helping to organising the event, is laying on free local transport to the nearest performance from a range of pickup points around the towns.

Performances take place on:

  • Monday 21 September at 3pm at the Sevenoaks Community Centre, Cramptons Road, off Otford Road, Sevenoaks
  • Tuesday 22 September at 10.30am at the Alexandra Suite in the Swanley Town Council Offices, Swanley
  • Tuesday 22 September at 3pm at the Edenbridge Community Centre, Four Elms Road, Edenbridge

Trickster is an energetic live story-telling performance that is back by popular demand. It aims to raise awareness of distraction burglary and dishonest doorstep traders without raising the fear of crime. The story is performed by professional actors who use familiar music and humour to take the audience back to times of war to unite them against bogus callers.

Cllr Elaine Bracken, the Council’s Cabinet member with responsibility for community safety, says: "The 'Trickster' musical is an ideal way of making residents more aware of how they can deal with doorstep callers. We are aware that residents can often be visited by doorstep traders and then sometimes tricked or pressurised into paying out money for shoddy goods or services. Our aim is to reach as many people as possible with the message which will give them the confidence to say No!"

Places must be reserved in advance. The Council is advising residents to book early to avoid disappointment. To reserve a seat or for further information please contact Sevenoaks District Council on 01732 227000.

The three performances are part of a partnership initiative to help people living in the District feel safe. This initiative is being co-ordinated by West Kent Extra and Sevenoaks District Council with funding from NHS West Kent, West Kent Police, West Kent Housing Association, West Kent Arts Partnership and the Sevenoaks District Community Safety Partnership.

Trickster has been put on as part of the Council’s celebration of World Older People’s day, which takes place on 1 October 2009.
